Secretary Diana Dooley Recognizes 104 Birthing Hospitals
Smart Care California Award

Secretary Diana Dooley of the California Health and Human Services Agency recognized 104 hospitals with a 2016 award for achieving the Healthy People 2020 goal for low-risk, first-birth Cesarean sections (C-sections). These hospitals reached the goal in 2015.

To receive this 2016 Smart Care California award, a California hospital must have achieved a C-section rate of 23.9 percent or lower for low-risk, first-birth deliveries. The award is based on 2015 data for Nulliparous, Term, Singleton, Vertex (NTSV) C-section births and calculated by the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative based on Joint Commission specifications.

Smart Care California is a new public-private partnership that promotes safe and accessible health care for all Californians. It is co-chaired by the California Department of Health Care Services, Covered California, and the California Public Employees Retirement System.
