Health Information Technology Safety Initiative

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report that identified that while health IT can create new opportunities to improve patient care and safety, it can also create new potentials for harm.  Specific recommendations for minimizing patient safety risks were identified in this report.  In December 2012, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), released their plan for   addressing these recommendations.

The ONC’s Health Information Technology Patient Safety Action & Surveillance Plan specifically recognizes the important role PSOs have in identifying health IT patient safety hazards and has designed steps to include and assist PSOs in identifying and addressing health IT related safety issues into their plan.

CHPSO, in collaboration with 26 other PSOs across the US and the ONC, is developing a safety initiative to increase awareness over the potential hazards associated with health IT, inform health IT vendors of identified hazards, and disseminate mitigation strategize to members.
