Hospitals Are Not Airplanes: Seeking Reliability in Healthcare Through HCRO

In healthcare, we work in an ever-changing environment that is complex and very people-intensive. We have learned and imported best practices from other high-reliability industries, such as checklists used in aviation. These tools have helped move us toward higher reliability, which for us means providing care to every patient, in every site and setting, with each encounter, the way we intend to do so.

HealthCare Reliability Organizing® (HCRO®) is a distinctive approach to achieving reliability in healthcare. It is rooted in the excellent work that has taken place in recent years related to High Reliability Organizations (HRO). The difference between HRO and HCRO® lies in the collaboration and innovation required to achieve optimal success in healthcare – not the emulation of other industry approaches, which have thus far produced varying results.

The HCRO® model includes transforming both individual learners and healthcare organizations through a multi-step process of continuous improvement. Rooted in the foundations of socio-technical science and developed in collaboration with world-leading reliability experts, HCRO® is demonstrating that the path to sustainable healthcare reliability can be achieved.

HCRO® is about transforming the culture of our healthcare organizations. Join us to hear how your team can transform the culture of your healthcare organization with the goal of providing optimal care to the patients we serve.
